Albuquerque reflects the growth of America itself with its vibrant history and unique blend of cultures. The Duke City was named for its founder, Viceroy Francisco Fernandez de la Cueva, the Duke of Albuquerque. Growing at nearly twice the national rate, the city is now evolving into one of the West’s most important urban centers.
Central Avenue, Route 66, forms Albuquerque’s Main Street and the baseline for Downtown, featuring icons as famous and old as the KIMO Theatre (1937) and as new as the Century Theater Block, today’s gateway to Downtown.

Albuquerque’s Downtown is uniquely poised for an epic revitalization, with a redevelopment effort incorporating the principles of new urbanism. Aficionados foresee a walking community where people can easily live, work, shop, and play.

The Historic District Improvement Company (HDIC) is leading the revitalization effort, highlighting the Downtown’s prominence as the State’s center of retail, entertainment, culture and employment. Albuquerque is New Mexico’s Downtown.
